Rakesh Goyal. MD

Living with OCD? It can become overwhelming if you don’t know how to deal with it. Check out these tips from experts.

When it comes to living and dealing with OCD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, it can become exhausting and all-consuming. You might feel like that’s all that fills your days and nights, and it can become frustrating and overwhelming.

1% of the US population is affected by OCD. It is a mental health condition where a person experiences excessive thoughts and urges that are out of their control. These behaviors and thoughts are compulsive and irrational.

It’s a type of anxiety disorder, and even though there exist treatments for it, there are certain ways through which you can manage and deal with OCD on your own, so your life continues undisrupted.

Keep an OCD Journal

Excessive racing thoughts can become too much. If you keep an OCD journal, you can keep track of these thoughts and figure out what triggers these thoughts and compulsive behaviors. It can even help you figure out new triggers, and you can assess your OCD every day.

At the end of every day, read your journal and ask yourself why do you fear certain things? Are these irrational thoughts? How can you overcome certain obsessions?

Manage Your Stress

When leaving and dealing with OCD, it is extremely important to manage your stress levels. Stress management is extremely beneficial for those living with OCD as it can help cope and manage triggers and other OCD symptoms. You can practice relaxation or mindfulness techniques or listen to calm music while petting your cat.

Make Lifestyle Changes

A lot of times, people are indulged in lifestyle choices that can trigger their OCD. You can manage your OCD by changing your diet, exercising often, and having a good sleeping schedule. Avoid nicotine, drugs, and alcohol which can cause increased stress levels and anxiety.

Eat Well

Continuing on lifestyle changes, eating well can really affect your mental health and mood. If you eat good and healthy food daily, it will keep your nutrient levels in check and also keep your blood sugar levels stable.

Incorporate nuts, eggs, meat, beans, nuts, and fruits in your daily meals. Avoid tea, soda, coffee, and other energy drinks.

Reward Yourself for Success

Give yourself a pat on the back for all your successes. Coping and fighting OCD every single day is hard, and when you feel successful at the end of your day, you should celebrate this achievement and reward yourself. If you avoid an obsessive thought or urge to act on a thought, you can reward yourself by ordering pizza or one more episode of your favorite show.
