Are you unsure of what OCD is and interested in learning more about it? Check out this guide to know what causes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and how it affects individuals.

What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a pattern of obsessions and unneeded thoughts that cause you to follow a repeated behavior. People with OCD can suffer every day since their OCD interferes with their daily activities and can cause excessive stress and trouble. You’re probably wondering why don’t they just avoid these problems, right? Well, ignoring these things causes more stress and anxiety, eventually causing them to finally cave in to ease up. Let's walk through OCD symptoms to understand them better.

Symptoms

Obsessions and coercions are frequent in obsessive-compulsive disorder. But only obsessive symptoms or only compulsion symptoms are feasible. You may fail to realize how these obsessions dictate you; take up a significant amount of time and disrupt your everyday schedule, social, personal, and professional functions.

OCD obsessions are persistent urges, thoughts, and visuals that can cause anxiety and stress. People often just do what’s needed by performing the tasks to get rid of such symptoms. The worst part of these symptoms is they can disrupt your thinking and regular activities. The thoughts can often revolve around:

● Fear of mess and dirt

● Fear of uncertainty

● Sinister thoughts such as aggressive, sexual or religious thoughts

● Washing and cleaning

● Neatness

● Following a stern schedule

● Demanding assurance

● The urge to keep things symmetrical and ordered

● Fearful thoughts of losing control along with harmful behavior

● Checking things repeatedly

● Counting things repeatedly

Overall symptoms can include:

● Fear of being unclean or touching unclean objects

● Doubts

● Excessive stress when objects aren’t in order

● Thoughts of inappropriate public behavior

● Unpleasant sexual visuals

● Consistent Hand-washing

● Constantly checking doors to ensure they're locked

● Constantly checking the stove to ensure it’s turned off

● Counting in definite patterns

● Arranging everything

Causes

Although there isn’t any particular cause of OCD identified yet, some theories include biology, genetics, and learned behaviors. OCD can occur naturally when the body experiences a change in brain functions. OCD can have a genetic aspect to it, but that hasn't been completely identified yet. Some individuals tend to develop OCD by watching their loved ones and picking on those obsessive fears over time.
